abstract:There emerge tremendous governmental, commercial, and academic activities in study of ultra wideband (UWB) wireless technology recently, due to its appealing features and release of an unlicensed spectral mask from 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz for both indoor and outdoor communications. A UWB system can provide a very high-speed link and support a variety of applications in home/office and sensor networking, high precision geo-location, vehicular collision avoidance.
In this talk, a brief history of UWB communication will be reviewed first. Then, recent UWB-related activities in regulation, standardization, commercialization and research will be introduced, followed by detailed presentation of some contributions of my research group to this emerging area. Particular focus will be placed on UWB channel estimation and detection of information symbols in unknown multipath fading and multiple access communication environments. It will be demonstrated how various advanced signal processing techniques such as moment matching, subspace decomposition and power of R (POR) estimation have formed bases for successful development of corresponding solutions, and how perturbation analysis has served as one of the major tools for performance study in practical conditions with finite noisy observed data. Some simulation examples will be illustrated, and future research directions be suggested.
Brief Bio: Zhengyuan Xu received both the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electronic engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1989 and 1991 respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ, in 1999. From 1991 to 1996, he worked as an engineer and department manager at the Tsinghua Unisplendour Group Corporation. Since 1999, he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of California, Riverside, as an assistant professor. His current research interests include detection and estimation theory, spread spectrum and ultra-wideband wireless technology, multiuser communications, ad-hoc and wireless sensor networking.
Dr. Xu received the Outstanding Student Award and the Motorola Scholarship from Tsinghua University, and the Peskin Award from Stevens Institute of Technology. He also received the Academic Senate Research Award and the Regents' Faculty Award from University of California, Riverside. He has served as a session chair and technical program committee member for international conferences. He is an IEEE senior member, a member of the IEEE Technical Committee on "Signal Processing for Communications", an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology and the IEEE Communications Letters. He has published more than 70 papers in international journals and technical conferences.
